Republican Group Suggests 20 Percent Cut In Spending To Balance Budget By 1942
The Republican Program Committee urged a 20 percent reduction in federal spending toward a balanced 1942 budget. The report endorses some New Deal policies on foreign affairs, calls for tax increases on corporations and top earners, and favors limiting wage and hour regulation while preserving labor’s right to organize. It outlines a broader program to curb government spending, reform labor laws, maintain defense, and extend old age insurance to select workers.
