The Romeo Division of Lear Inc repeated as Lorain County Industrial Safety Council trophy winner at the 24th annual awards banquet held at the Palladium. About 360 members and guests attended.
John P. Baker presided as the Lorain County Industrial Safety Council celebrated a record year in safety. The Industrial Commission gave two Merit Awards: to Ohio Fuel Gas Co for 6,474,321 man hours without a lost time accident between 1939 and 1954, and to the Lorain County Industrial Safety Council for reducing accidents. Eleven group winners, eleven 100 percent winners, and sixteen companies cutting accidents by 25 percent or more were also honored.
An elderly Bay Village woman died at St Joseph Hospital Lorain from injuries in an automobile crash on Lake Rd east of Lorain. Miss Josephine Probeck 73 of 29617 Electric Dr Bay Village died after her car skidded near Stop 61 and crashed into a tree. She was employed as a secretary with the Cleveland Opera Association. Survivors include a brother Fred C. Probeck and sister Mrs. Chester Reynolds both of Bay Village. Funeral services were set for 1:00 PM Sunday at Daniels Funeral Home Lakewood.
Round two of the Barricelli dispute over sortable truck scales is set for February 28 in Lorain Municipal Court. Judge LeRoy Kelly will hear attorney Frank Levin of Cleveland argue for a new trial for two truckers convicted Monday of driving overloaded trucks.

London reports Communist China says Formosa crisis at dangerous stage and backs a ten nation conference proposed by Russia. Pravda labels Western cease fire efforts as a swindle while Moscow repeats that Formosa and nearby islets are internal Chinese matters and criticizes Britain for mediation.
Harry W. Hyman, vice president of The E. Hyman Company, was elected president of The Elgins Community Chest Inc for 1955 by the trustees. Other officers include Ernest R. Seabold as secretary treasurer, Roy F. Vandemark as second vice president, A H Waters as treasurer, and Courtney F E Kirby as executive secretary. Hyman, a longtime Elyria resident, has led chest efforts since 1941 and has held multiple prior roles in campaigns and charitable groups.
Mildred Charvat pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity at arraignment on charges she embezzled $100,000 from CIO union funds in Cleveland. Judge Harry A. Hanna ordered a court psychiatric examination to uncover the man she says received the funds, which she refuses to name.
Former Republican Mayor Robert T. Oes treicher died at 58 after suffering a stroke. Fire Department emergency squad rushed him to a Columbus hospital where he succumbed.
Dayton police say they have broken up the nylon stocking robbery gang with the arrest of Howard M. Green 30 who admitted participating in six of about 30 robberies since January 1. A killing is linked to one crime but Green denies involvement. FBI seeks Green's partner Carl Miller 31 who fled the state. The duo used nylon stockings as masks and Green confessed loot totaling 6272 dollars, 5000 from the Liberal Market holdup on January 29. Green is jailed in Montgomery County awaiting armed robbery charges.
Taipel dispatch reports 21 Red vessels sunk in an air sea battle off Taishan Island 186 miles Formosa. Nationalist forces claim heavy Communist casualties and destruction of night barracks and billeting areas. Reinforcements lost 1,800 troops. Four men in work clothes with guns attacked two payroll guards at an apartment construction site in midtown Manhattan. They seized the company payroll of about $19,000 in Tudor City around 8 a.m. Today’s robbery involved a staged hold-up as guards arrived with the payroll.
