Spinks Wins Bold Victory Over Ali in Las Vegas

Leon Spinks, a 24 year old Olympic champion with seven pro fights, defeated Muhammad Ali in Las Vegas to capture the heavyweight boxing title. Spinks’ youth and stamina bridged the late rounds as Ali, aging at 36, showed less snap. The victory appears earned rather than a fluke, with experts noting Spinks' readiness and timing.

Ohio city first to seek ban on homosexual bias in hiring

Elyria moves to become the first Ohio city to bar discrimination based on sexual orientation in employment and to prohibit bias in city contracting if annual business with the city exceeds 2500 dollars. The measure, brought by Equal Opportunity Coordinator Jane Barlow, passed a committee 3 to 1 and faces full council action. Residents crowding meetings oppose the proposal as leaders split over its necessity.

Energy meeting yields little help for Ohio Edison crisis

Ohio Edison's chief executive John R. White said a Midwest energy summit did little to avert widespread cuts, warning that unless big out-of-state power or coal purchases occur soon, his utility may order a 50 percent reduction in electricity use by Tuesday. He noted Lorain County could be hit hardest as coal supplies dwindle and emphasized the need to restore coal flow, even as a Michigan utility reportedly offers up to 1,000 rail cars of coal for sale to fuel-strapped utilities.
