Inflation surges into 1980 with 1.6 percent rise

The January Producer Price Index jumped 1.6 percent in a five year high, powered by gains from gasoline to jewelry while food prices fell 0.8 percent. Fed raises discount rate to 13 percent

The Federal Reserve Board raised its discount rate from 12 percent to 13 percent, citing oil price rises and inflation fears. It marks the fourth hike in the last year, with prior increases to 19, 10.5, 11, and 12 percent in July, August, September, and October respectively.

U S nuclear retaliation ability halves in two years

UPI reports a U S Air Force study shows retaliatory capacity after a Soviet first strike has declined to about half of 1977 levels and will stay low until around 1985. Factors cited include improved Soviet accuracy, faster deployment of sea based missiles and multiple warheads, plus US program cutbacks and delays.

Deer crash on Rt. 20 near Oberlin injuries deer and car

A car driven by Ofuso Amponsah struck two deer on Rt. 20 west of Oberlin, killing two and injuring none of the driver. A third deer limped away. A Good Samaritan effort followed with a second crash involving Machovina and Hunt, leading to two accidents, two damaged cars, two deer dead, one deer missing, and a report of illegal deer possession.
