The Elyria Civil Service Commission will run a firefighter exam despite 16 layoffs and a 2009 reduction to 52. The test costs 3000 to 5000 dollars and aims to fill 23 positions if a federal Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant is awarded within 60 days.

A 16-year-old North Ridgeville boy, Daniel Kovarbasich, waived a hearing to move the murder case against him to adult court. He is accused of fatally stabbing 55-year-old Duane Hurley on Jan 22. Under Ohio law, 16-year-olds charged with murder must be tried as adults.
An Elyria businessman, Eric Zaffer, received a four year prison term after pleading guilty in Franklin County to worker's compensation fraud a fourth degree felony two counts of tampering with records a third degree felony and 10 counts of forgery a fifth degree felony. He must pay 139558 in restitution and 56340 in investigative costs to the Bureau of Workers Compensation. Zaffer's Medical Consultants Inc. prepared medical reports for law firms representing injured workers but an audit found inflated percentages and embellished conditions to secure larger awards for permanent partial disability. The case was referred to the health care fraud division of the state attorney general's office which conducted a search of Medical Consultants Inc. in March. The law firms that employed Medical Consultants Inc. were not involved.
Elyria district confronts a persistent deficit cycle with 4.4 mill emergency levy on May ballot. Supt Rigda and Treasurer Stephens note years of cuts since 2004, with no new tax money since 2004 and renewed 2009 levies producing no added funding. District actions include closing schools and laying off teachers to trim costs and slow projected shortfalls.
