The Elyria school board unanimously approves a 4.99 mill emergency levy for May 4 to raise 4.4 million. Combined with 3 million in budget cuts the plan aims to avoid a 2014 deficit of 29 million, with substantial program impacts and potential retirements.
The Lorain High School site sees the last structures demolished with a final smokestack topple as brickwork is cleared. Once Lorain High, the building later became Lorain Middle School in the 1990s.
Elyria report details 38 year old Brady Phillips named as a willing participant in a December 20 robbery that left David McDonough and Michael Stump dead. Phillips faces two counts each of murder aggravated robbery aggravated burglary and six counts of felonious assault along with tampering with evidence and weapons under disability.
Elyria firefighters union led by Dean Marks urged City Council to restore 15 firefighters per shift, reopen Fire Station No. 2, and reinstate demoted officers. The administration cites financial limits, and council offered no immediate plan after a nearly two hour Safety Committee meeting.
