Origins and legends of Valentine’s Day traditions
Ancient Rome celebrated Lupercalia a lovers festival with gifts and matches. Saint Valentine figures both priests and bishop linked to beheadings around 270–273 A.D. The day was reformed by Pope Gelasius in 496 and spread in England by 1446, evolving from gift exchanges to written valentines. In the U.S. Civil War era it became widely celebrated.
