POWS Return Home as Four Area Servicemen Released

Four local area prisoners of war arrived at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines and were seen by families on television as they stepped off planes. Marine Lt. Col. Harlan Chapman, 39, Elyria resident, was among the first 115 released, with Air Force Capt. Burton W. Campbell, 33, and former Lorain Amherst residents Air Force Col. Richard Keirn, 48, and Air Force Maj. Paul Kari, 37. After medical exams and debriefing they head to undisclosed U.S. bases. Chapman’s family described relief and joy at waking daybreak scenes. The report notes timing of arrivals and initial screening before onward travel.

Returning POWs honored but privacy urged by Nixon
