Pierre Rinfret, veteran economic adviser, calls Reaganomics pie in the sky and predicts only about 10 billion in federal cuts for fiscal 82. He warns of higher inflation near 15.5 percent in 1981 and tight credit, foretelling distress in housing and auto markets.
In a 2 p.m. meeting five Elyria officers will press Safety Service Director Charles Hoagland on who pays for gas in city owned cruisers used off duty. A Lt. Cameron report credits the two year old support cruiser program with nearly 2 million in savings and reduced crime, while Mayor Keys linked continued car use to gas reimbursement.
In Las Vegas the Hilton fire killed eight, injured hundreds, and led to the arrest of Philip Bruce Cline, 23, a room service busboy charged with eight counts of murder and arson. Police say the motive was sensual gratification as he watched the blaze from the east tower. Cline, held in solitary confinement, faced arraignment while investigators noted multiple smaller fires and a large evacuation of about 4,000 guests.
Elyria dentist Eugene Frederick Mulier plans to reactivate an abandoned 40 foot dam at Cascade Park on the Black River to generate up to 2.7 million kilowatt hours annually, enough for 490 homes, with a preliminary permit allowing three years of feasibility studies costing about 50 000 dollars.
The region endured subzero wind chills near minus 30 as 20 mph winds whipped in. Only 0.8 inch of snow fell while Ohio saw a larger storm and at least one snow shovel death. Auto service lines were busy with dead batteries and stalled cars, AA A reports about 50 calls by 9:30 am. Cleveland Hopkins logged minus 4 with 3.8 inches of snow. Bratenahl East Shoreway crashes involved 30 and 15 to 20 cars, called the worst by a veteran officer. Weather improving with clear skies and moderating temperatures expected through Friday.
