Elyria mayor signals tax increase to fund city services

Elyria Mayor Bill Grace told a combined Lorain County Chamber and Elyria Rotary group that residents must pay more if city services are to rise. He hinted at a November ballot proposal to fund Police Fire and Parks and Recreation, aiming to grow officers from 85 to 100.

Snowy storm causes spinouts across Ohio roads

Winter storm pummels the area as cars slide off roads and spinouts rise. Ohio Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Adams notes many accidents occur south of U S Route 20 while drivers fail to slow down as conditions worsen. Avon police report several spinouts along Lee Street A2.

U S Steel recalls most Lorain tubular plant workers

U S Steel plans to bring back about 410 of 460 employees at its Lorain tubular plant next week. Union official Don Golden says most remaining workers are probationary and not recalled. Company spokeswoman declines comment while quarterly report notes improved tubular shipments and profitability.

Poor economy slows Lorain County quarry project

The $500 million west Lorain County quarry and upscale residential complex by Industrial Realty Group is moving forward but at a slower pace due to tight credit. IRG executives say lending constraints have slowed, not halted, the Dec 2007 announced plan for 1000 acres with homes up to 1.3 million, a hotel and a 100 foot waterfall.
