Man Dies In Route 18 Accident

Two crashes on Route 18 near Wellington within 18 hours left one dead and one injured. Robert M. Burleigh, 24, of State College Pennsylvania, died after his car hit a Red Star Transit truck loaded with steel near Penfield while returning from University of Michigan graduation events. John Lehner, a serviceman from a southern camp, was treated at Allen Memorial Hospital for head injury after his car lost control while attempting to pass a truck and veered into a ditch. Burleigh’s body was taken to a funeral home and later to Scranton for services.

Three Or More Workmen Killed In Barge Blast

A giant barge loaded with crude oil exploded in the Warrior River near Tuscaloosa Alabama today killing at least three workmen and injuring a fourth. The barge was still burning with black smoke rising hundreds of feet hindering counts of additional victims.

West German House backs troops if equality granted

Bonn reports a heated debate over rearmament as the West German House approved sending troops only if full equality with East Germany is granted. The vote, 204 to 156, followed a two day session amid opposition from Social Democrats. A conscription bill and the NATO treaty issue loom as the next clashes. In Tuscaloosa, officials dispatched firefighters to a barge fire tied up at a pumping station. J F Clem ents cited five or six workers on the barge as the vessel burned with black smoke rising over pines. Meanwhile in Washington, 1,420,000 unemployment claims were filed in January, the highest in 18 months.

Pairings Made Today For County Tournament

Lorain County Scholastic Class B basketball pairings for the Oberlin College fieldhouse tournament were announced after a coaches and officials meeting. A 16-team field includes Lorain County Class B League members plus Clearview of the Southwestern Conference with games starting Wednesday and continuing February 13 to 22, featuring seeded teams Ridgeville Eaton Brownhelm Brighton and others.

Harshaw Wage Boost Approved for 775 Workers

The Regional Wage Stabilization Board in Cleveland approved a four cent hourly wage increase for 775 Harshaw Chemical Company employees. The raise covers 534 Cleveland workers and 241 at the Elyria plant.

Hearing before the Wage Stabilization Board touched the demand for an 18 12 cent hourly increase by the United Steelworkers. Moreell warned the rise would raise prices and wipe out income after taxes, while Bethlehem Steel and Atlantic Steel argued high costs would be passed to consumers unless a new contract is signed.

Republic Steel Pays $1 815 000 in Wages Here Last Year

Republic Steel reported total wages and salaries of 1 815 000 for Elyria employees across its two operations. The Elyria Steel and Tube plant employed about 310, with 1 355 790 in wages and 119 000 in indirect benefits. The Niles Production plant employed about 1100 and paid 459 918 in wages plus 41 000 in indirect benefits.

Air Force Cuts Its Production Goal By 24 Percent

Washington reports the Air Force reduced its peak monthly aircraft production goal by 24 percent to align with President Truman's defense budget. The cut delays reaching the 143 model wings target, with the 1,250 plane weekly goal now pushed to a later date.

Pupils Move Monday Into New Franklin School

Three hundred fifty four pupils will walk out of the old Franklin school Monday afternoon for the last time. They will take their books and personal effects to the new Franklin Elementary and Junior High on West Eleventh Street. The modern building features new desks, soundproofed classrooms, excellent lighting, tile floors and radiant heat. Enrollment is expected at 439 on Monday. Formal dedication and open house are planned for Sunday, March 30. Three teachers from the Washington Building will join the Franklin staff: Ona Schmuker, Carol Day Tibball, and Charles Ray Wilson.

Four-State Windstorm Kills Two. Hundreds of Thousands in Damage

A 60 mph wind and heavy rain swept through Ohio Pennsylvania Kentucky and West Virginia last night causing two deaths and many injuries. Cleveland area damage peaked at about 100000 with downed poles trees and shattered windows. A power line electrocution in Star City West Virginia and a shattered 14 foot window at Keyser injured residents. Storm warnings extended along the Atlantic coast as crews cleared debris and assessed widespread damage from Columbus to Pittsburgh and beyond.

Four Teen-Agers Hurt In Crash

Lorain teens Carlena Ivan Autumn Day Glen Tillack and Diane Weston suffered injuries in a crash. Ivan and Day, both 15, faced possible hip and back fractures. Tillack, 16, sustained a back injury. Weston, 15, was treated and released after hospital care. Police switchboards were overwhelmed by calls about downed trees and power lines.

UN Planes Lost In Korea In Week Report

In Korea UN airmen claim 10 planes lost in the past week with one Communist MiG-15 probably destroyed and three others damaged in air battles.
