Elyria police questioned Raymond E. Watson Jr. after a late Thursday night shooting at Wilkes Villa left a man hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the buttocks. Watson, 20, of 954 Melvyn Lane, was listed in fair condition at Elyria Memorial Hospital following surgery.
Elyria schools canceled classes at St Jude's as flu fever and strep throat kept students and teachers home. Principal Sister Margaret Hartman noted a large number of absentees and ten students sent home Thursday, with exact illness counts not disclosed. Sister Lisa Novak cited teacher and student absenteeism in the decision.
