Son hit in crosswalk as mother guard works near home
A school crossing guard watched her eight year old son Matthew Lucas be struck by a northbound car in a crosswalk on W 220th Street near Parkview Elementary. He is in critical condition after surgery for head and abdominal injuries. A 78 year old man, Henry Schmitt, died at Fairview General Hospital about an hour later, possibly from the stress of the crash. The driver, a 25 year old Cleveland woman, claimed brake failure and was cited for expired plates. Police say the car was within the 20 mile per hour school zone limits when the accident occurred at 3 42 p m. Witnesses reported other children nearby but none were hurt.

Guard on E River Street May Be Considered
Elyria police said they have not decided if a school crossing guard will be placed on E River Street near Lincoln Court after five year old Richard Galindo was struck and killed Tuesday while walking home from McKinley Elementary near the area.
