Robbery Motive Cited in Slaying of Magazine Writer
ALBUQUERQUE Feb 7 Authorities said robbery was the sole motive in the killing of Carl Taylor 8 magazine writer, dropping earlier cult vengeance theories. Modesto Trujillo 18, his houseboy, has confessed to shooting Taylor twice and stealing cash, travelers checks and a watch. The crime scene included the weapon and money hidden near Taylor’s bones. District Attorney Mabry called the case closed on the cult hypothesis, noting the boy’s youth and lack of cult ties. Taylor was documenting Penitente rituals when slain and had photographed their temple, not found among his effects.
