Public Interest Fight Over Consumer Advocacy Office Grows

A veteran House member declares ownership of the House as consumer protection legislation faces a February vote. The battle pits consumer rights against business money, with lobbyists from Sears, General Motors, and groups like the Business Roundtable opposing a small, expert Consumer Representation Office. Supporters argue the office would curb price gouges and help farmers and small businesses, while critics warn of government overreach and lost congressional standing. The outcome hinges on swing votes in H.R. 9718 amid intensifying Capitol Hill pressure.
