Emigration in Ireland Falls for Five Years

Emigration from the Irish Free State has declined for five years. For the ten months to October last, departures were markedly lower than in previous years. In 1925 total grants reached 27,147, then fell to 22,808 in 1928 and 48,921 in 1929. The United States remains the top destination, but after July a reduced quota of 18,600 limited new emigrants. By October last, 7,880 left under the new quota, suggesting the cap may not be filled by next June.
