Congress will approve a one year, non military space project plan under President Eisenhower, granting Defense Secretary McElroy broad authority to pursue space initiatives including weapons systems. A stop-gap accord settles differences over a 549.67 million missile and military construction bill, with McElroy named as space czar if needed and civilian military control still under debate. Georgia man Sgt. Ronald G Phillips, 28, of the Marine Corps, was charged with smashing his car into a parked auto while drunk in Galesburg Illinois. The same parked car was hit by Phillips last November in the same spot.
Mayor J Grant Keys signed an emergency ordinance banning pinball machines as gambling devices across Elyria. The unanimous council vote follows a safety committee hearing after a prior failed attempt. Private clubs and homes must remove machines within 48 hours, or face enforcement. playing pinball is illegal thereafter.
Navy Secretary Thomas Gates announced plans to triple Polaris capable nuclear submarines from three to nine under a $1 billion program. He told the House Armed Services Committee that production could match the time level of the original three subs, but warned of risks in an unbuilt missile and submarine.
