Mayor W H Van Oster announced a compromise on the gas rate dispute. The company will drop the third and fourth years, making a three year contract: years one two and five at the stated rates. The three year plan would cut the average small dweller's cost and allow rate renegotiation at year three.
Elizabeth Vanderberg daughter of Michigan Senator Arthur Van Denberg has drawn notice for musical talent at Rockford College Rockford Illinois where she studies. Her home is listed as Grand Rapids Michigan.
County commissioners and township trustees launch a program to hire relief recipients to clear ditches, starting in Sheffield township with about 375 workers. Each worker earns 3 dollars daily, tied to relief accounts. noncompliance could lead to vagrancy charges. Cost savings reach 4 to 5 thousand dollars per ditch, benefiting property owners and local governments. The plan aims to expand to Elyria Carlisle townships and other areas.
At Ridgeville sanitarium in Wickliffe Ohio nine women died in a cottage fire that followed frantic returns by some inmates into flames after attendants had guided others to safety. Seventeen slept upstairs. ten were carried down as seven on the ground floor escaped. Fire origin was undetermined, and threats against the Glendennings arose during the incident.

Sixty eight boys and girls from 27 northern Ohio communities attended Gates Hospital clipping clinic sessions. Sixteen were first timers, 52 returning for ongoing checks on their handicaps as doctors urge early treatment. The youngest, a six month old Elyria girl, and the oldest, a 19 year old Elyrian, were among those examined with Dr. F B Roberts in attendance to observe the work.
A burglar entered the home of Mr and Mrs George Stevens at 218 East Avenue around 7 30 p m getting $30 from Mrs Stevens purse. A maid, Mrs Ricketts, found the intruder on a second floor with half of his face covered. He fled through a rear balcony dropping to the ground leaving clothing items and a jewel box behind. Police and detectives searched the area but made no arrest or further clues.
Officials weigh building a 100000 gallon standpipe and main at an estimated cost of 9000 to regain eighth class fire protection. Savings include 6500 yearly in fire insurance and 100 a month on power with improved pumping efficiency, currently ninth class rating.
Representative P H Rogers of Lorain county introduces a bill in the Ohio House to let cooperative milk organizations deal collectively with distributors. The measure amends the Valentine Anti trust law after a Cleveland area injunction against such dealings and fears of price conferences by milk distributors.
The East Carlisle Rural School District will end the current term in late March instead of May due to funding shortages. The district will cut activities and expenses to keep costs within the tax revenue forecast. Residents are invited to attend the next board meeting to discuss the 1933 appropriation.
Stephen Robert, 318 East River Street, elected president of the Lorain County Building Trades Council for the ensuing year after the annual officers election on Wednesday. He has led the council for four months following Stanley Plica's resignation. Otto Chestnut is vice president, Charles Sauer Elyria secretary, H S Hiie Lorain treasurer, and C. Hoy Elyria sergeant at arms. Stephen also serves as president of the local bricklayers union.
Ohio news item reports Rep P E Ward’s measure to raise bond and levy approval to 65 percent outside the 15 mill limit. The Senate Taxation Committee will consider amendments to apply 55 percent to bonds for municipally owned utilities. A companion bill would limit 65 percent to general bond issues and school expenses.
Nationwide business shows strength with Dun reports in the right direction. Cook County January auto registrations rose to 3,126 the highest since July, while January 1932 and December figures are lower. Steel operations in Youngstown hold at 20 percent capacity as managers anticipate a rise next month. Chevrolet dealers at the Chicago auto show report a 76 percent rise in retail sales from the previous year.
Elyria firemen investigated two odor reports yesterday afternoon. At the Fay Company store on Broad Street they found smoke from a furnace under the building and soot in the smoke pipe. Later they checked Charles Lord’s Seventh Street home where smoke was smelled but no source or fire could be found.
In Geneva on February 3 the British backed a final tack that failed to salvage the French disarmament plan before the World Conference General Commission. The attempt was rejected, leaving the French proposal deadlocked as delegates weigh next steps.
