First flame spotted on shuttle booster during Challenger disaster

Investigators released film footage showing a flame spurting from the right booster in the final 15 seconds of the 73 second flight. NASA officials declined to speculate on its meaning while other sources link the flame to the fuel tank. The booster nose cone and motors were recovered. no ditch was activated.

Militia patrols Port-au-Prince as Haiti unrest continues

Haitian militiamen in unmarked cars patrolled downtown Port-au-Prince to curb protests after two days of violence against President-for-Life Jean-Claude Duvalier. Disturbances spread to Cap Haitien with a funeral for three killed. U.S. Embassy cited tear gas and gunfire. Missionaries reported roadblocks between Gonaives and St. Marc and looting of Mission Possible food supplies. At least five killed and 60 injured in two days of rioting.

Oil glut hurts Libya more than U.S. sanctions
