In Medina and surrounding counties the cold disaster caused estimated losses of 5.6 million dollars across farms. Thoburn cites 70 000 in livestock 150 000 in buildings 200 000 in crops and 150 000 in milk. Wells notes 250 pigs died and 30 000 in farm machinery. Carter singles out canal pacts to defend the canal
President Carter argues that the proposed treaties secure the permanent right to use the Panama Canal and defend it if needed. He says military action would be used only to keep the canal open and safe, and counters Reagan’s slogan by noting the canal zone is not U.S. sovereign territory yet remains essential to U.S. interests.

Wall Street gains but Panama Canal Zone remains disputed
Markets rise broadly with the Dow up 3.73 as sentiment shifts. In contrast, Carter defends Panamanian sovereignty over the Canal Zone, noting long-standing rent terms and U S recognition of Panamanian sovereignty, while Americans’ treaty opposition is narrowing from 87 to about 55 percent. Ohio grain prices show mixed futures across regions with No 2 wheat and corn varying and soybeans steady or up.
Ban on smoke detectors proposed
Washington UPI Rep Ted Weiss, a Democrat from New York, introduced legislation to ban manufacture and interstate sale of most ionization smoke detectors. He argued these devices contain radioactive americium 241 and pose cancer and environmental risks if breached or disposed of improperly.
