A new basic oxygen process BOP furnace at U S Steel Lorain-Cuyahoga Works began operation at 11 p m producing four 220 ton heats smokelessly for the night shift. When both furnaces run full time they will make a 220 ton heat every 48 minutes.
Lorain city council approved several administrator pay raises effective early 1972 with increases from 4.4 to 50 percent. The plan sets new salaries for mayor auditor solicitor treasurer council president and councilmen plus adjustments for the municipal judge and clerk of courts. The measure was approved as an emergency to allow filing for the May primary and was prepared by a three member subcommittee.
Kyodo News report claims South Vietnamese paratroopers entered southern Laos with U S air support on the Bolovens plateau 95 to 125 miles south of Khe Sanh. The move aims to disrupt Ho Chi Minh Trail supply lines. no ground troops confirmed by U S officials.

Lorain County Board of Mental Health and Retardation voted to demand a written contract outlining services from the Walter G. Nord Guidance Centers and to withhold 20,000 for February. The board seeks the minimum operating amount and will review a revised February request at a special meeting.
