Docking problem solved Apollo 14 flies on towards moon

Apollo 14 crewmembers using a flashlight and self made guides tried for over an hour to diagnose a docking failure between the command ship and the lunar lander. Roosa said the link worked and mission control planned to reassess the situation after a sleep period. If docking could not be ensured the plan was to orbit the moon instead of landing.

A 10 member presidential selection committee is proposed to choose Lorain County Community College’s next president. The committee would include four trustees and two representatives from each faculty student body and administration. Trusting board approval required.

Communist led attack kills six in six U.S. positions near Chu Lai

Rockets and mortars pounded about 100 rounds into six U.S. positions and followed with a ground assault four miles west of Chu Lai, killing six Americans and wounding 26. The 198th Brigade reconnaissance team suffered a deadly ambush as five enemy fighters were reported killed. Other strikes hit Da Nang Cam Ranh Bay Tuy Hoa and Pleiku areas with one American dead and 18 wounded. A separate balloon crash near St Paul injured two balloonists lightly.

Bombing Campaign in Laos and Vietnam Troop Reductions Reported

The war’s 115th day sees U S raids on the Ho Chi Minh trail through southern Laos with about 30 B52s and 200 fighter bombers. U S command confirms first unit to be phased out, 1st Squadron 11th Armored Cavalry, reducing total U S strength to under 284,000 by May 1.

Record low temperatures sweep Ohio with several ties

Ohio reports multiple new cold records as Akron Toledo and Youngstown reach 4 to 7 degrees below zero. North Ridgeville observer notes a record for the day tied at four below, while Cleveland Hopkins marks minus six. Cincinnati shows a milder near zero. Winds yield a 40 below wind chill.

Teen girl held in stabbing death of Lorain man

Lorain County detectives say an 11 year old girl is in custody as the primary suspect in the stabbing death of 20 year old Alexander Noble. Noble died after a head on collision with a pickup on O Neil Boulevard following a prior stabbing. Noble's apartment hosts the fatal argument precede the crash. A second witness is to be questioned. Driver Joseph Niemsky 33 of Lorain was treated and released. Obituary appears on page 30.

Auto show opens today at Midway Mall with 89 cars

Nixon outlines upturn forecast in Congress

President Nixon delivers the annual economic report to Congress, projecting full employment with unemployment under 4 percent, 88 billion dollars in predicted growth, and a push to combat inflation. The $229 billion budget and state of the union propose cabinet reorganization and spending cuts to curb inflation.

Three men charged in Lorain County secret indictments

Lorain County Grand Jury secret indictments led to three arrests. Norman Barnes, 44, of Amherst, faces homicide by vehicle in the death of Winifred Kelley, 51, from Elyria after a December crash on Routes 76 and 10. Barnes posted a 5 000 dollar bond. Ronald J. Myers, 20, of Lorain, and John Balzer, 24, of Avon Lake, were charged with marijuana possession burglary grand larceny and receiving stolen property related to a November burglary at Bob O Link golf course in Avon. Myers and Balzer posted 10 000 dollar bonds each.

Nixon economic report predicts record output and jobs rise

The report to Congress foresees strong growth with rising employment and controlled price increases. It rejects wage price controls while promising effective inflation measures. Nixon endorses a four percent unemployment goal and a three percent inflation target for 1972.
