Marie, a 34 year old staff sergeant with ten years in the Army, faces forced retirement under a new defense bill provision that discharges service members who have HIV AIDS regardless of illness or ability to perform. She worries about losing her career after years of duty away from family, and cites stigma and leadership remarks as added harm. There are 1,049 service members with AIDS, currently allowed to serve if fit, but the bill would change this policy. Marie contracted HIV from her late husband before his diagnosis, and has kept her status private to protect her daughter and career.
