How presidents plan their own funerals
Carter's memorial path centers on Plains Georgia, with a major Washington service planned after years of family and military coordination. The Joint Task Force National Capital Region will oversee ceremonies while Biden and the Carter children shape arrangements. The piece surveys history of presidential funerals noting Washington Capitol lying in state, cathedrals, and symbolic choices reflecting each leader's life.
