The Shriners Burns Institute in Cincinnati treats severe burns using toys, dolls, and play therapy alongside medical methods. Staff prepare patients and families for long healing, serving 16 states and visitors from 35 states and 12 countries, including 11-year-old Paul Edward Jewell of Orlando who was badly burned in a bomb blast.
In Lockhart Florida an 11 year old, Paul Jewell, died? No, he survived but suffered severe burns from a Christmas Day bomb at a convenience store. He had 60 percent body burns, 50 percent survival odds, and his right leg was amputated below the knee. Donations near $30,000 poured in to cover medical costs and the reward for the bomber rose to $17,500. The blast scattered nails and debris across the store lot, and investigators pursued the case as Orange County officials described the scene. Paul was treated at Shriners Burns Institute in Cincinnati where doctors warned of a long recovery with surgeries and therapy. The institute provides toys and psychological support to young burn patients, with staff explaining procedures through dolls and puppets to ease fear and help families cope. Continued care includes physical, occupational and mental health therapy as recovery advances.
