Safety Council estimates New Year traffic deaths
The National Safety Council projects 350 to 430 people may be killed and 16,000 to 20,000 disabled in traffic accidents over the New Year weekend starting Friday 6 p.m. through Monday midnight. A UPI count notes 53 fatalities so far. Safety Council President Vincent Tofany urged drinkers to avoid driving, saying the highway problem includes even moderate social drinkers who toast the New Year.
