China and U.S. seek ties with Taiwan in new year accord
President Carter and Hua Kuo-feng hailed the establishment of full diplomatic relations between the United States and the People's Republic of China. China proposed ending bombardment of Quemoy and Matsu with travel trade and mail links, urging talks to reduce tensions across the Taiwan Straits. Taiwan remained somber as the U.S. flag was lowered for the last time in 65 years.

Last Day of 1978 Brings Rain and Possible Snow
A Weather Observer reports over half an inch of rain on the last Sunday of 1978, which could have been six inches of snow. A strong high pressure system kept northern Ohio mild, preventing a major snowfall. Rainfall equals about ten inches of snow. last year’s same period saw 19.5 inches of snow. Flurries possible today and tonight with a high in the low 30s.

New Year Celebrations Across U S A From Times Square To Pasadena
