Goebbels Fears Career May End Over Beetings Rumors

United Press reports in Basle say Nazi Propaganda Minister Paul Joseph Goebbels feared for his public career after stories in the United States Britain and France claimed he was beaten by friends of actress Lida Baarova and suffered a nervous breakdown. Berlin correspondents could not confirm the beatings and German circles called the stories unfounded. The Daily News said Goebbels’ wife was forbidden to leave Germany and planned a divorce, while the London Mirror suggested his confinement was due to influenza and he relapsed upon hearing the publicity. Goebbels reportedly asked von Ribbentrop for an official denial, which was declined. Authorities later said Goebbels had recovered enough from influenza to deliver a year end radio address.
