Coast guards searched the icy water as North Bass Island residents heard the craft moments before the crash.
Hollywood dispatch reports newsreel footage of the Panay attack by Japanese planes shown in Los Angeles theaters for the first time. The reel, shot aboard the gunboat Panay by Eric Mavell, drew gasps from male and female viewers. a fuller reel by Norman Alley was en route to Washington for officials, possibly the President.
Common Pleas Judge Charles R. Sargent ruled three Sheffield Lake village referendum ordinances illegal invalid and unenforceable. The declaratory judgment came at the request of residents including Joseph Theobald to stop enforcement after the November election. The measures would have created three wards with two councilmen each and tied salaries and fines to vote totals.
A blaze at the W. H. Winstead Co. Tobacco warehouse in Bradford, Ohio caused about $100,000 damage. The fire broke out early today in Greenville vicinity, injuring no one and leading to full loss of the warehouse building and contents.
Belle Valley operator Willard V Archer acknowledged to a Senate committee he drew more than 12300 dollars in state funds over 19 months while serving as an inspector and running a liquor agency. He said he resigned as inspector effective January 1 after his agency contract was dropped. The case prompted calls for recovery action and possible civil suits, as Gov Davey planned his own departmental probe and a broader investigating committee.
The Elyria Safety Service Director appointed Russell L. Payne of 292 East Sixteenth Street as a new patrolman effective January 1, bringing the force to 27. Payne, 31, joins four other new appointees and follows Civil Service steps and tests. he comes from Lafayette Indiana, formerly a driver for A G Bean and more recently at Hy Grade Dry Cleaners. The department also includes Chief E J Stankard, Captain Corbett E Southam, and other officers in a 27-man lineup.
Lima reports twenty five killed at Huancabamba last night as Cerro de Pasco region shakes. Unconfirmed dispatches indicate up to seventy five injured or killed at Oxapampa. Tremors blamed on subterranean volcanic disturbances.
Delaware O. Dec 29 William E Haas 62 former state senator and Delaware post master died today from acute bronchitis. He had served briefly in public life and held local posts.
Dr A G Hyde superintendent Massillon State Hospital testified in the sex murder trial of 21 year old Alexander Manoff of West Homestead Pa that the youth is mentally irresponsible and of a psychopathic personality allied to dementia praecox. He said Manoff likely learned crime details from newspapers and called him a pathological liar while deeming him presently insane. Hyde cited infant hydrocephalus feeble minded mother and vagabond youth as indicators, with exaggerated reflexes enlarged glands uncleanliness and swarthy appearance supporting mental deficiency. In Fairport Ohio serum was given to 60 residents to curb meningococcus spread after four Lake County deaths. County Health Commissioner Elliot ordered injections following Mrs Julia Mirch death at 76. Her grandchildren Elisa beth Mary and John were hospitalized in Cleveland with the disease. Oliver Alamen also hospitalized. twelve cases in the past ten days.
