Wall of water hits Green River valley dam

A wall of water from a burst irrigation dam in the upper Green River valley near Rock Springs Wyoming caused heavy damage to ranches and threatened large cattle herds. An emergency call went out for cowboys to move cattle to safety as ice and a roaring flood swept the area. Total damage was not estimated.

Fires and Storm Ravage Japan Nationwide

An unusual wave of fires coinciding with blizzards devastates Japan. Akita Prefecture reports 500 houses razed and 253 homes destroyed nationwide. Six killed, 1600 homeless, and many ships damaged as telephone service disruptions spread. Fires reach Yokosuka and Matsue area.

City Council Nears Final Adjourned Session Tonight

The present city council meets at the courthouse for its last session in at least two years. Key items include a gas rate ordinance on its third reading and a new franchise for the Cleveland Southwestern Railway Co. with an eight cent city fare. The steam and street railways committee holds Wilson’s franchise request pending. Regular committee reports and legislation are also on the agenda.

Infant burned to death in crib blaze near Steubenville

Ten month old Evelyn Shepherd, daughter of Mr and Mrs William Shepherd of Circle Green near Steubenville Ohio, was fatally burned when flames from an open grate set fire to her clothing. In Paris, the Bank of France lowered the discount rate to four percent on December 20.

Hickman Confesses to Many Robberies

LOS ANGELES Dec 29 William Edward Hickman faced arraignment for Marion Parker’s murder as an accomplished criminal with no killer record. He confessed to holdups including a Christmas Eve 1920 Rose Hill drug store hold up where Thom s was killed and officer Oliver wounded, naming Welby Hunt as accomplice.

School Clinics Planned in Elyria Grade Schools

Plans for medical and dental clinics in Elyria grade schools were announced by WH King, chair of the Kiwanis public affairs committee, after cooperation from the school board and the Parent Teachers association. The program will start with a doctor and dentist providing part-time service, with a nurse to be added full-time later.

Progress Slow In Hill Murder Trial In Ottawa

Attorneys for Harry Hill charged with matricide asked the court to delay juror selection. Illinois law limits trial within four months of arrest. Hill’s window expires January 3. A motion challenging the venire panel argued it exceeded a legal limit of 24 jurors. the hearing was continued. A decision could delay the trial further. In a separate note, Gus Thomas, 9, of Woodstone Avenue, injured his right hand in a clothes wringer and was treated at Kirks Memorial hospital.

John Tt. Patterson, superintendent of the Athens public schools, is elected president of the Ohio State Teachers Association, succeeding Charles S. Meek of Toledo. Pulice Chief KE J Stankard announced there would be no extension of time to obtain 1925 auto tags. Motorists without tags after midnight December 31 face arrest and a minimum $25 fine. harsher penalties possible. Hales will operate Jan 1 2 to sell licenses to those halted. Lorain and Elyria officials warn against delays as tag sales have begun. Total tags issued stand at about 2,600 passenger and 300 commercial from the courthouse bureau.

Toledo Judge Curtis Tillotson Johnson Dies In Auto Crash

Former Elyrian Curtis T. Johnson, 66, Toledo attorney and former Lucas County Common Pleas judge, was killed last night when struck by an automobile at Oskwood Avenue and Monroe Street in Toledo. Son of N L Johnson, he and brother Ben practiced law after graduating from Williams College. He leaves two sisters in India and a brother in the East. Funeral services set for Saturday at two o'clock in Toledo.

Ridgeville Grange to Dedicate New Hall in Ohi on Thursday

Ridgeville Grange plans a dedication ceremony for its new hall on Thursday at 9 a m with State Master Harry Llayton as speaker. The 18 men who supervised the construction will be honored and the public invited to inspect the building after the ceremony. A banquet for 500 follows at six, before the dedication, in a modern auditorium designed for two meetings simultaneously. Ridgeville Grange now has 157 members and the project completes a long cherished goal.

Two men fined in petit larceny cases

Steve Chismyer was fined ten dollars and costs and sentenced to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to petit larceny for stealing a gas book from Peerless Oil Company. Aaron Serb was fined ten dollars and costs after pleading guilty to receiving stolen goods for buying the gas book from Chismyer. Both waived trial.

Man And Wife Killed In Crash At Gleveland

A man and his wife and three others were injured when an auto and a truck collided in Gleveland on December 25. John Smetana aged 24 and his wife Elsie 20 died at the scene. Police attributed the crash to traffic signal confusion.
