Zoo surplus animals spark trade and euthanasia debate
Omaha s Henry Doorly Zoo director Lee Simmons says he faces an overabundance of 21 scimitar horned oryxes 17 ring tailed lemurs and 21 Bengal tigers plus six Siberian tigers and plans to dispose of four or five of each to other zoos ranches or private owners. He warns large carnivores require big quarters and long term care and advocates culling by euthanizing some animals to make room for younger breeding stock while noting public sentiment and ethical concerns. He cites breeding successes and genetic management challenges that leave some species nearly extinct in the wild yet self sustaining in captivity.
