Five people die as Ohio endures a record cold wave on Christmas Day with subzero readings across the state. Central Ohio hit four below and Akron reached five below while Cincinnati marked one below, amid 33 mph winds and heavy snowdrifts.
A blizzard and icy pavements caused at least 13 deaths across Ohio on Christmas Day. Five traffic deaths occurred near Youngstown including Ethel Wright and Steven Slaverty. Other victims included Elena Gooden in Cleveland, Richard Schaad in Maumee, A B McCreery in Richwood, James Stewart in Akron, Werschel Dixon in Chillicothe, Joseph Malady in Cleveland, Andrew Fischer of Luckey, and several other fatalities blamed on the storm.
Kate Riley, 50, was found frozen to death in an empty Akron house as zero weather froze the city. James A. Stewart, 34, died in an icy intersection when his auto collided with a truck in the same wintry conditions.
Partly cloudy and slightly colder with light snow flurries in the extreme east tonight. Friday generally fair with improving conditions.
Washington reports indicate Secretary Harold Ickes will publicly endorse a billion-dollar slum clearance and low-cost housing bill sponsored by Senator Robert Wagner. The plan would let local agencies handle projects, include subsidies for long-term housing, and seek $500 million to $1 billion in funding, amid hopes for broader housing legislation next session.
In Tientsin on December 26 police seized all railway stations after a dispute between the central government and the Hopet-Chahar political council over appointing a railway chief. The central government named Lu Men-Hisung acting director of the Peking Tiaoning Railway, while the semi autonomous council named Chenhuehsheng. Gen Sung Chey-Yuan led 100 safety men to secure the stations to back his appointee.
FEAST LIVERPOOL OH Dec 26 Clarence Dickey 39 and his brother Frank 37 were delivering milk when two gunmen tried to force them to open a milk case. Frank threw a bottle then both men fired injuring Clarence abdomen and Frank arm before fleeing in a car. The brothers survived their wounds.
Washington dispatch reports Senator Edward Costigan denied Republican charges that federal relief funds were used to coerce WPA workers to back the New Deal. The National Republican Congressional Committee and former Governor Gifford Pinchot had claimed such misuse, citing a Colorado letter criticizing alleged "Tammany Hall" influence via federal funds.
Elyria post offices report belated Christmas mail still heavy as packages and cards from other cities arrive late. Postmaster R B Lersch notes many items addressed inadequately or incorrectly, delaying last deliveries while efforts shift to correct addresses.

Ethiopian forces said they downed an Italian plane six miles south of Daggahbur after Ethiopians hid in a pit fired on the craft. Two occupants escaped while a third was captured and described as severely harmed. A second plane reportedly arrived at noon seeking the downed men.
At 1 30 a m yesterday Jay Bilshey of the Chapel street garage reported a Pontiac owned by Ruth Forsythe of 11 South Cedar street Oberlin stolen while he moved another car from the garage. The car, with engine running, was seen driving away from Chapel street and recovered ten hours later in Ridgelawn cemetery. No driver was found.
Bellefontaine Ohio December 26 Edward Jones 32 a veteran firefighter died minutes after rescuing three year old Freddie Crump from a second story room in a burning house He carried the boy to the ground and collapsed from suffocation before aid could reach him.
Four bandits robbed the Union Bank in Columbiana Ohio around 12 30 P M the gunmen entered the bank while one watched outside Police say no one was injured after a gun battle with Tracy Tidd a nearby department store owner firing from his second floor window The bandits fled on Route 14 toward East Palestine pursued by police and state troopers They held up bank president IFP Funkhouser bookkeeper Mrs Mary Crawford and treasurer Sylvia Smith and triggered a burglar alarm during the robbery.

In Cleveland on December 26 harbor nights were dark and fog bound as the shipping season ended with the freighter Marco of Copper Steamship Co arriving. It marked the second Christmas shutdown in years. The Marco carried scrap iron from Monroe Michigan and was trapped by thick ice at the Detroit River mouth before relief troops aided its release.
