A sanatorium visit becomes a Christmas legend as three very old companions plan a secret hospital visit. A Shakespearean actor, a former bank owner, and a boastful baseball catcher plot to meet a newborn boy born just after midnight on Christmas Day, bringing a quiet, hopeful magic.
Tehran reports quote Foreign Minister Ghotbzadeh that some of the 50 American hostages could be freed for Christmas, but militant students deny any orders and say none will be released. The source notes disputed claims, embassy photos showing cards, and a visit by Rabbi Herschberg and clergy to press for release.
Washington expects Soviet backing for U N sanctions against Iran over the Tehran hostages. State Department officials say Moscow understands the stakes for U U S relations if it vetoes or stalls action. Cyrus Vance and Thomas Watson have warned that a veto would be unfriendly. Carter seeks UN action with nine affirmative votes required in the Security Council.
House Republican Leader John Rhodes told ABC that Congress will likely approve a tax cut of about 20 to 25 billion dollars in 1980. Administration aides say Carter will not seek an income tax cut in January's budget, fearing higher spending could fuel inflation currently exceeding 13 percent. Rhodes argues political pressure and windfall profits tax issues could push lawmakers toward a cut despite the administration's stance.

The Murray family of Amherst places a live 20 foot blue spruce in their country kitchen for Christmas. With a 21 foot ceiling the tree required seven men and pulleys to lift and position, aided by a library staircase. Decorations include baseballs, old dolls, and homemade ornaments, skipping popcorn due to the tree’s size. The 125 children at John Murray’s Day School enjoy the grand display daily.
