Elyria City Schools may shut for several days late in 1978 unless voters approve an operating levy or state aid arrives. Board members anticipate a $1.7 million gap. daily operating cost runs $80,000 to $90,000, with continued expenses even when closed.
Rescue crews recovered 12 more bodies as officials raised the death toll to 35 in the Continental Grain Co disaster near New Orleans. Eleven injured include a sheriff's deputy. The two story office building was crushed by the 26 story elevator explosion. Investigators consider grain gas buildup or spontaneous combustion as possible causes. Scott Peterson, 19, a University of New Orleans student, was among the first victims.
A 26 year old man identified as Thomas Helms of Hawaii tried to end his life by leaping from the Empire State Building 86th floor observatory but wind pushed him to an 85th floor ledge. He crawled into an office and was hospitalized for treatment and psychiatric observation.
Ismailia Egypt President Anwar Sadat warned the upcoming Christmas summit with Israeli Prime Minister Menahem Begin could fail. Begin was expected to offer concessions while Washington urged realism as Sadat pledged candor and plans to lay all cards on the table.

Two Lorain County men, both 24, are charged with voluntary manslaughter in the hit skip death of Lodi police Captain Carl Sommers. Lawson and Black were arrested in Lorain County and jailed in Medina County awaiting arraignment in Wadsworth Municipal Court. The incident began December 5 when Captain Sommers and Officer Gray pursued a vehicle in Lodi. the truck allegedly fled, became stuck, and the driver William Rice fled on foot, leading to the fatal head injuries received by Sommers.
The forecast calls for windy conditions and mild temperatures with variable cloudiness. Lows will be in the lower 30s, winds from the west at 15 to 25 mph, and a 20 percent chance of precipitation tonight and tomorrow.
A western New York man with long chamber of commerce experience is named chief executive officer of the Commerce & Industry Association of Greater Elyria. Jonathan Bates, 45, will serve as executive vice president starting June 1, succeeding Richard Elliott who retires after seven years with the Elyria group. Bates has led the Olean Chamber of Commerce for 16 years after moving from a local post. A search committee selected Bates from more than 30 applicants, praising his fit to run a smooth operation.
