Recycled Christmas Tree Surges to 24 Feet at Lorain Drive

Vincent Stever decorates a 24 foot recycled Christmas tree at 3201 Lorain Dr. The tree grew from a sapling planted 14 years ago after the family’s first Christmas in the home. Stever and his sons Ralph and Mitchell climb a scaffold each year to add 250 lights and handmade decorations cut from soda and beer cans. The garland is formed from thousands of aluminum pull tabs.

Grain elevator blast near New Orleans described as H bomb

A Continental Grain Co elevator along the Mississippi River near Westwego Louisiana exploded with a blast described as like an H bomb. Four workers were rescued with unknown injuries, up to 40 men were present, and some were plucked from a burning silo by a helicopter. Smoke visible across New Orleans as debris flew 500 feet.

Fishy littering case on East Lorain Street

Oberlin police investigated a fishy littering incident when a Plas Construction Co truck dumped a three foot wide by half mile long trail of dead fish along East Lorain Street en route to the Brotherton landfill. The load came undone after crossing railroad tracks leaving a mess for motorists. Driver Michael Moro was cited for an insecure load or allowed to pick up the fish, later choosing to do so.

Papp trial decisions due Jan 24 in Summit County

Summit County Common Pleas Judge James V Barbato will decide on January 24 whether Timothy Papp will be tried by jury, judge, or a panel and where the trial will be held. Hearings on motions filed by Papp’s attorney Charles Adams and Assistant Prosecutor Robert Gary loom, with a discovery motion about defense details and requests for a typewriter and law books. If rulings favor a jury trial or change of venue, arrangements may be tight before the March 1973 rape murder case of Roxie Ann Keithley.

Area car theft ring busted by deputies

A six month Lorain County Sheriff investigation ended with three arrests in a major auto theft operation believed to steal reprocess and sell over 100 vehicles yearly. George C DeBerry Easter Dillon were charged with receiving stolen property and possession of a weapon and forged auto titles and stickers were seized along with a gun and a partial body shop setup.

Peace bombshell looms at Cairo peace talks summit

Egyptian and Israeli negotiators failed to reconcile basic differences and eyed a Christmas summit with a potential bombshell to revive the Cairo peace conference. Egypt pressed for main principles of peace while Israel sought detailed definitions, as President Sadat and Prime Minister Begin prepared for a Sunday meeting that could spur progress.

Buckled Up For Warmer Than Normal Fall Weather

Columbus reports that this fall was 3 percent warmer than normal and 22 percent warmer than last year based on degree day calculations by Columbia Gas of Ohio and other agencies. The data cover November through March with a current 1,279 degree days versus a normal 1,326. Tonight cooler with low near 20s and a 10 percent chance of precipitation, tomorrow partly cloudy and warmer with highs in the low 40s.
