Comedian Bob Hope proposed a $10 million financial deal to Hanoi to secure the release of American POWs. He met with Nguyen Van Tranh in Vientiane Laos and sought a North Vietnamese visa to visit Hanoi and discuss a charity show to aid a Vietnamese children’s fund. Hope said officials would need to confer with the foreign minister. He hoped for a visa in Bangkok and suggested the plan might succeed in a few days.
President Nixon signed a 1.6 billion three year program to fight cancer focusing on research and early detection of oral cervical and breast cancers and authorizing 15 treatment and research centers. The law keeps NCI in charge with a new presidential panel to oversee NIH. American Cancer Society calls it a milestone acknowledging lives saved by timely diagnosis.
Ohio may see a split in its Democratic National Convention delegation after Gov. Gilligan endorsed Muskie, with Auditor Ferguson backing Humphrey and Treasurer Donahey rumored for McGovern. The 153-member delegation will be chosen from 23 districts and statewide, potentially triggering a costly primary contest. AFL-CIO chief King also criticized the Muskie endorsement as untimely for the party.
Lucy Mama Medera, 29, of Cleveland, had been jailed in Cuyahoga County as a material witness and faced a $1500 bond after a Lorain armed robbery case from May 26. Judge George White reduced her bond from 5000 and ordered her kept in jail as a witness until next month.

Capt R Wil kis Muir notes the bounty allows rapid distribution from the Chronicle Telegram and Grant Building center. Donations also fund meat for Christmas dinners and food orders up to 12 dollars per family. The effort, aided by Elvria Youth Council and local groups, targets about 430 families today with 20 to 70 pounds of food per family and many new toys from diverse donors.
