Gilligan backs Muskie in Ohio delegate fight looming

Ohio Governor John Gilligan endorsed U S Senator Edmund Muskie for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination. Gilligan will run as a Muskie pledged delegate, departing from a favorite son plan, saying Muskie is the most qualified candidate. Muskie welcomed the early support as a friend along the way and noted formal campaign steps will begin Jan 4.

Gilligan backs Muskie splits Ohio labor unity

Ohio AFL-CIO chief Frank King denounces Gov. Gilligan for endorsing Sen. Edmund Muskie, calling it ill advised and damaging to party unity. He recalls a prior plan to wait for a second meeting among Democrats and says the endorsement undermines efforts to assemble a unified slate against Nixon. King says the federation has no formal candidate at present.

Father slain in Santa line at Higbee's store

In Cleveland a 35 year old father of four, John E. Fitzpatrick, was stabbed five times by a 21 year old man while waiting in line to see Santa at Higbee's department store. Fitzpatrick died at St. Vincent Charity Hospital after rescue efforts failed. The assailant and his wife, both in their early 20s, were detained.

Lorain woman held six months as unpaid material witness

Lorain woman Lucy Madera, 29, has spent six months in Cuyahoga County Jail as a material witness to an armed gas station robbery in Westlake without being charged. Judge Milton Holmes set a $5,000 bond. habeas corpus actions and court reviews follow as officials seek explanation and possible release and counsel.

Waldheim chosen to lead United Nations in five-year term

Kurt Waldheim an Austrian diplomat was chosen to be the United Nations secretary general for the next five years. The Security Council endorsed him after rounds of balloting and the General Assembly was to appoint him on his 23rd birthday. Waldheim has long served Austria and held key UN roles including head of the committee on peaceful uses of outer space and chairing the IAEA nonproliferation committee.
