Illinois Dealers Face 50-Cent Coal Price Rise Debate

CHICAGO Illinois coal dealers discussed absorbing a 50 cent per ton price hike or passing it to consumers after producers raised prices to offset operating costs under the three day week. T. E. Gorman of the Illinois Fuel Merchants Association said dealers will decide individually whether to bear the higher cost or raise consumer prices. Some retailers may absorb the increase. A prior 25 cent rise in price two months ago was not passed on by some dealers. The American Retail Coal Association urged President Truman to intervene in the soft coal dispute and urged UMW leader John L. Lewis to end the three day work week amid ongoing contract negotiations. Some railroads report tightening coal supplies with five to six days on Cincinnati to Indianapolis routes and 12 days on Chicago to New York runs.
