La Grange Soldier Witnesses Mass Japanese Death by Own Action

Pte Earl S. James of La Grange Ohio, with the 31st Infantry Division, witnessed a mass Japanese death by own action on the first day of an amphibious operation in the Pacific. He was later wounded by shrapnel, recovered, awarded the Purple Heart, and returned to duty with his battalion. The account describes the chaotic battlefield, bombed reefs, shelters, and a dramatic Japanese action ending with a circle of explosives as the Americans advanced. James remains tight lipped about the event.
