Plan to shield Jersey Shore shifts from gates to elevating homes
The Army Corps switches from massive storm gates at Manasquan Barnegat and Great Egg Harbor inlets to elevating 6,421 homes and hardening 279 critical facilities. It also aims to restore 217 acres of salt marshes to absorb floodwaters, reducing cost from 16 billion to 7.6 billion but offering less protection. Congress must approve funding and the plan could take 11 years to finish.
