Gas Rate Ordinance Over Veto Passes Council
City council, by a two thirds majority, passed over Mayor Leonard Smiths veto a new five year gas rate ordinance. It establishes rates of 66 cents per thousand cubic feet for three years, 67.47 cents for year four, and 71.5 cents for year five. Total cost up from the current 69.4 cents. Voting for the ordinance were Anna Kennedy Henrietta Colburn George Thompson Elmer Nelson Seward Black and Henry Sassmanhausen. Voting against were Frank Henke Edward Wilcox and Leonard Fowls. Wilcox and Fowls had previously supported the measure but switched after a ward survey. The measure faces possible further review by the Public Utilities Commission.
