A Kingston New York IBM facility displayed a giant electronic brain that monitored and directed a Bomarc rocket against mock enemy planes off the U S Atlantic coast. The test showed the brain rechecking courses, outracing drone planes, and guiding the rocket to intercept a F80 in formation with a dramatic display of automated defense.
Northeastern Ohio is mostly cloudy and cold with occasional snow flurries today and tonight. Highs near 15 to 20, lows 5 to 12, lingering cold Sunday with Lake Erie snow flurries and a Friday temperature range of 27 to 41.

Washington API Space scientists prepare to establish two way communication with the Atlas satellite spinning above Earth. If successful they will send a New Year message from President Eisenhower for rebroadcast to the world. The satellite has already played back Eisenhower’s Christmas wish of peace on earth. The Defense Department notes the first effort to send information to the satellite for rebroadcast will be made today.
About 13 were injured in a spate of county road collisions as temperatures dropped from 38 to 18 degrees. State Highway Patrol investigated 11 accidents with several more pending reports, Lorain City police logged six crashes, Elyria five, and the Sheriff’s Department four. Details continued on Page 2 and sections 16, 25, and 4.
Mrs. Juanita Monturi of North Ridgeville resumes guiding the Christmas Helping Hand project despite two traffic crashes while delivering boxes. She plans involvement with Girl Scouts and other groups to assemble about 30 baskets and seeks local sponsors for next year.
In Monroeville a mother Sarah Elizabeth Swartz and her two children Sarah Ann and James M. Swartz Jr. perished from carbon monoxide as the father James M. Swartz Sr. returned from work in Norwalk. The three were found early this morning around 1:30 a.m. with Sarah Ann due to celebrate her third birthday. Coroner Dr. Charles Edel noted the deaths and continued coverage on the next page.
In Lorain Municipal Court Judge John Otero dismissed all six blue law charges against Lorain merchants for Sunday sales due to lack of proof of ownership or control. The ruling ends Lorain's first blue law trial though observers say further actions may follow. Vermilion man Steve Navalinsky was fined $50 and costs after pleading guilty.
Three young people died in two separate late night and day accidents in Lorain County and Vermilion. An Ohio Turnpike crash near Elyria claimed three lives including a seminary student from Catholic University and service members. Several others were injured, with victims identified by name and hometowns across Wisconsin, Washington, and Illinois.
Ohio plans a spring release of a statewide survey ranking unguarded railroad crossings. The 1959 priority list will include traffic counts and physical features to determine where flasher lights or automatic gates should be installed, with state funds potentially shared with railroads.
The calendar marks winter starting Monday at 3 40 a m with sub zero temperatures from the past weeks described as autumn’s chilly breath. The weatherman predicts another icy weekend for northern Ohio as winter formalizes its arrival.
About 100 guests were ordered out of the Congress Hotel as a trash fire broke out in the Congress Restaurant two doors away. Fire companies rushed to the downtown business section, forcing guests to flee in a tense temperature.
Two Vermilion youths were killed when their car was struck by a train at a Rt. 60 Nickel Plate crossing. John Bushong and Onyx Falls were identified as occupants. authorities sought parental identification. The 1957 Buick belonged to Bushong's father. Continued on page 2.
