The Lorain Times-Herald and Mansfield News were sold today to the Lorain Journal and Mansfield Journal respectively. Brush Moore Newspapers and A Horvitz arranged the consolidation to pool resources in Lorain and Mansfield, ending two papers in each city. The Lorain Journal and Mansfield Journal continue as the sole papers in their markets.
Mayor W H Van Oster says he will veto the coal taxing measure after two hours of debate. The ordinance imposes a $50 annual tax on city coal dealers and $150 on outside dealers and truckers not operating yards or scales in Elyria, aimed at revenue and guarding local business from competition.

John Franklin, 19, of 658 Crosse Avenue, Amherst, received a $500 verdict in common pleas court against Lloyd Nichols, 21, of 456 Church Street, Amherst, for injuries from February 23, 1931 incurred while riding in Nichols's automobile. Court officials said the related suit was settled. Also, the council authorized the city auditor to draw $30,000 from the county treasurer for tax distributions.
Elyria's Not An Empty Stocking Committee reports the Christmas fund needs about 200 dollars to supply 600 needy families with baskets. Immediate donations of cash canned goods and produce are urged. purchases must be made by Wednesday.
A Baltimore juried trial of L L Jones, a B and O railroad detective, ended without a verdict after deliberations that began yesterday evening and continued until shortly after midnight. The panel stood seven for acquittal and five for conviction, prompting Judge A R Webber to dismiss them. The case may be retried or mailed, per Prosecutor-elect John Harding. The trial had been delayed by illness for about three weeks.
Police were informed yesterday of the theft of 186 Christmas trees from the Ohio Nursery stock on East River Street. Detective Lloyd Sweet said the trees were taken across the frozen river and loaded onto a truck on the opposite bank. The trees were valued at $15.

Senators Norbeck and McKellar push plans to cap subsidies while critics warn of higher consumer costs, noting $400 million yearly could be trimmed for veterans and $43 million for mail subsidies.
A private car出 exploded from dense fog on the Farmersville Johnsville road and struck a motor bus carrying 20 pupils. Three children were seriously hurt Melvin Sears age 17 George Smith and Nora Daffler were treated for injuries. The bus driver Lawrence Kessling reported limited visibility and both vehicles veered, the bus tipping onto its side. First aid and hospital transport followed by local farmers aiding victims.
A blaze last night damaged the home of Mrs. J. J. Buswell at 150 Northrup street. The garage and its contents including an automobile and lawn tools were totally destroyed. Damage is estimated at 300 dollars with about 250 dollars from the garage loss. the house suffered scorching and window damage but remained standing. Fire Chief W. N. Bath attributed most loss to the fire starting in the garage before alarm.
