In Wewoka Oklahoma on December 19 the Deep Rock Oil No 1 Douglas well erupted in flames. A 60 million cubic feet gas feed fed the blaze driven by a west wind. Tulsa firefighters flew in by air to assist. Drilling in Wilcox sand area halted for safety. Over 1,000 feet of drill pipe blasted out, heavy tools scattered over a half mile. Crews reported no injuries and asbestos suits were issued for workers due to heat.

El Golea Overdue In Mediterranean Storm
The French passenger ship El Golea carrying 200 passengers from Algiers to Port Vendres was overdue as a severe Mediterranean storm lashed the region for 35 years. Dozens of distress calls came in while relief tugs could not depart Algiers harbor due to two tugs and 12 barges sinking at the entrance. Damage in Algiers port reached about 30 million francs. Man and wife fatally burned in Colorado home blaze
Myard L. Jenkins, 28, a Worthington chicken rancher, and his wife Melia, 27, died after a fire swept their three story Columbus residence. They escaped a flaming coop on the first floor and fled down the stairs to reach outdoors before dying at a hospital. Jenkins, a University of Nebraska graduate, and Mrs. Jenkins, an Ohio State alumna, had operated their ranch for a year.

Washington man Stephen A. Forberger project engineer for Fokker aircraft was killed when his parachute failed to deploy after leaping from a plane of his own design. The craft, en route from Te terboro Airport New Jersey to Wright Field Ohio, landed safely at Bolling Field but the engineer did not survive. New London Conn Dec 1 Coast guard boats chased the speedboat Albertina toward Vineyard Light near New Bedford Mass early today as the crew set fire to the rum laden craft and leaped into the water.
