The city will add a stormwater fee to property tax bills starting January 2015 to fund a program meeting a federal mandate for better management of stormwater into the Black River and Lake Erie. Residential rates start at $4.33 per month. higher rates apply to other property types, based on impervious area.
On Tuesday the strike by workers at Lorain County Department of Job and Family Services entered a second day. Union bargaining chairwoman Kelly Fields said workers remained off the job, joining a long running dispute with county commissioners over contract negotiations with United Auto Workers Local 2192. Management staff and some on duty staff handled calls as the agency's director Mary Lou Golski reported services were affected since about 9 a.m. Monday. Local residents and protesters gathered outside the Elyria area agency, including Lorain Councilman Joshua Thornsberry and residents Monica Borges, Michelle Ramos, and Ruthie Burks.
Alfred Cleveland admitted to running drugs and stealing cars in a federal court hearing but denied killing Marsha Blakely in 1991. He is serving 20 years to life and is not eligible for parole until March 2015.
