Ohio lawmakers moved a 368 million tax package toward final passage as the unemployment insurance bill awaited Gov. Martin L. Davey's signature. A 94 to 17 House vote followed a clash over sending the measure to a conference committee amid accusations, political jabs, and warnings that delaying could jeopardize federal payroll tax funds.
Chicago December 17 John D M Hamilton offered his resignation as chairman of the Republican National Committee. Treasurer C B Goodspeed reported the Port spent 60654677690 in its unsuccessful bid to elect Alf M Landon and ran a deficit of 901501.
Cloudy and slightly colder weather expected tonight with snow and rain in the northern portion. Friday forecast calls for continued unsettled conditions with light precipitation and cooler temperatures across the region.

The date of the hearing was not set but expected before January when the legislature may investigate La Follette’s educational policies. A dismissal during Christmas holidays would avoid student protests.
Downtown Elyria gained a bright new focal point as hundreds of colored lights lit Ely Park for the first time, sharing space with the long running Christmas lights. An ice igloo in the park center glittered with shifting colors suggesting gems while the Christmas star near the courthouse entrance shone brighter than the rest. The display will stay lit through New Year’s Day.

In Columbus on December 16, about 100 Ohio school officials pressed State Director E. L. Bowsher to lobby the legislature for 26 million dollars for schools from next year’s anticipated sales tax revenue. Delegates, claiming to represent 70 percent of the state population, adjourned to the state house to demand change. They seek about 67 percent of revenues for education, citing a 60-40 split now. The dispute highlights a bitter clash with municipalities over distribution as the sales tax on food ends.
The Department of Justice expressed full support for J Edgar Hoover head of the FBI amid praise from Attorney General Homer S Cummings for his leadership in recent gunplay raids.
