In a cross‑state gun battle ending in a cornfield near Sidell Illinois deputy Joe Walker died from a bullet wound after pursuing five bandits who had robbed Citizens State Bank of Clinton Indiana of 13000. Two bandits died, two jailed, one wounded and dying, with loot recovered including about 2000 in pockets and 300 left in a yard.
