City teaching staff hit hard by flu in Elyria schools
Teacher absenteeism rose sharply as flu spread across Elyria city schools. Absences reached 58 this morning with 47 last Thursday and 50 on Friday, straining classes and forcing substitutions. Some schools reported double or split classes and cancelled conferences while pupil absence rose but varied by school. School officials said no closure decision was made. schools will close after Friday for Christmas holidays.

Flu prompts visitor limit at EMH hospital

U S frees seven captured North Vietnamese in gift boat
Seven sailors captured October 22 1967 about 50 miles south of Haiphong were released 12 miles northeast of Vinh and sent home in a small boat. The action followed talks in Vientiane Laos and was described as a goodwill gesture. A US spokesman noted no guaranteed reciprocity from Hanoi.

Firemen Prevent Second Eaton Gas Tank Blast
Quick action by 19 Eaton Township volunteers averted a second explosion at Standard Oil storage in Eaton early yesterday. Grant N. Bruce, 38, of Wellington, suffered second and third degree burns over 65 percent of his body and remained in critical condition at University Hospital. Fire chief Chester Carpenter said high winds and snow aided cooling of the second tanker, and nearby departments stood by as a precaution while the area was evacuated and traffic halted.
