Elyria's 1953 tax rate will be 24.76 mills or 24.76 dollars per thousand, announced by County Auditor Frank Ayres subject to final approval. The rate is 1.24 mills lower than the present 26 mills due to a county valuation increase of 16 percent from state wide tax equalization. Valuation rose about eight million dollars, with bonds for school and sewer not yet included and likely to be added in 1954.

Tempers Flare As Council Clash Overshadows Fire Scene
At noon a two family home at 248 Harvard Avenue suffered extensive living room damage from an undetermined origin fire. Neighbors called Elyria firefighters who found smoke and water damage throughout the dwelling. occupants were away at work. The council meeting earlier erupted over zoning ordinance methods with President Ralph Terry and Building Inspector Hart Dickason clashing over process and fairness. Council members urged adherence to the engineer Mathews revised plan with Lord insisting on following his recommendations. Continued on Page 2.

Section Hand Is Killed By Train In Grafton
Charles Johnson 22 of Mansfield was killed at 11 02 am Monday while working as a section hand on the New York Central Railroad in Grafton. He apparently did not hear the warning signal and was struck by a passing train.
