Very Cold Weather With Widespread Snow Across Ohio

A cold front brought snow across Ohio with 150 mile wide bands and strong winds 18 to 25 mph. Roads were slick in several counties while lake snow and squalls affected Lake Erie towns. Toledo Cleveland Columbus and Cincinnati reported low teens to mid thirties. Forecasters warned continued very cold conditions for the next two days.

Minor and scattered accidents hit Ohio roads after snow melt

Snow and slush caused several fender benders across four Ohio State Highway Patrol posts. Lorain County and Elyria city crews salted and cindered roads. 12 tons of salt cost 453 dollars. The Ohio Turnpike remained slippery though mostly clear in outer lanes. One track on Pt 20 and secondary roads had slick spots but roads were opening today.

Kefauver Faces Ohio Delegates in May Primary

In East Liverpool Ohio a Kefauver backer predicted the senator would win delegates in every Ohio Congressional District against Governor Lausche in the May primary. Lausche said he would allow his name as a favorite son candidate and Kefauver planned to announce his candidacy in Washington on Friday.

Semi finalists named in National Merit Scholarship drive

An Elyrian and two area students were named today as high school seniors who reached the National Merit Scholarship semi final round. The three join 5,000 high scorers from 4,000 in tests, with about 200 eventual winners to be chosen after a second test in January. The Elyria area semi finalists are Glenn H. Waldron of 1637 Graft Ave, Elyria. Leslie Kay Roberts of 78 Jefferson St, Vermilion. and Donald J. King of 1007 Edgeware Dr, Vermilion-on-the-Lake.

A State Highway Department official told about 30 La Porte residents that land devalued by the planned 51 340 000 relocation of Rt. 10 at LaPorte would be compensated. Killer Captured After Gun Battle in Tattered Scene

A man described as a berserk individual who killed three members of a family and wounded a fourth was captured in Tandergrift Pennsylvania after a gunfight that left a suspect wounded. Police reported the suspect, tied to the mass killing, was taken into custody following the exchange of fire with officers.

The Ely post office handles a surge of Christmas mail with 147000 pieces mailed by Dec 24 last year and 141000 more this year. Monster vessel sinks off Grand Bahama Bank with 11 rescued

The 11 crew members of the motor vessel Monster were rescued after sinking off Grand Bahama Bank in the South Atlantic. They were ashore at Miami Beach aboard the tanker Robert C. Tu after Coast Guard aid and a spotting aircraft directed rescuers. The men reported rough seas and were unharmed.
